Trailer

A trailer actually consists of two separate functions. A load unit and a chassis. It has become generally accepted that a trailer in intermodal transport should be a composite unit of both functions. In addition, it must be able to be lifted by large cranes, which means that the trailers used in intermodal transport are reinforced. Today, perhaps 10-15% of trailers can be lifted.

In order to transport these trailers on the railway, special wagons are required. They have lowered spaces to accommodate the trailer's bogie section. This means that the trailer must be lifted to be placed on the jvg wagon. Special locking devices are available to lock the load carrier to the jvg wagon. 

Special terminals that can provide lifting equipment - container cranes

Unfortunately, these terminals with these expensive and complicated cranes have developed and dominated intermodal transport, with the result that that market has become minimal and has become synonymous with end-point traffic, as transhipment costs and transport times have become catastrophically high.

Container trucks

As an alternative to the large and expensive container cranes, the container truck was developed. It already existed in the ports, but now it was used in container terminals in inland terminals. Looking at the cost picture, it was not as cheap as expected, as the hardened ground surface for the trucks made great demands. Then the trucks need large free areas to be able to transport and handle containers. With a heavy container and the truck's counterweight, it is not unusual for an axle load of 70 - 90 tons, which places high demands on the ground. It is also to be considered as reduced costs if the terminal is no longer to be used.
